Background of the Study
Economic empowerment is often cited as a key factor in increasing women’s political participation and leadership. In Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, the relationship between economic empowerment and women’s involvement in politics has become an increasingly important area of study (Baba & Umar, 2024). Women’s access to economic resources such as financial independence, property ownership, and entrepreneurship opportunities has been shown to correlate with higher levels of political engagement and the ability to run for office (Dada & Idris, 2023). Empowered women tend to have more confidence in participating in political activities, as economic stability enables them to engage in campaigns, fund political aspirations, and network within political circles (Sani & Umar, 2025). Despite these advantages, many women in Keffi still face significant barriers to political participation, including cultural attitudes, political instability, and limited access to economic resources (Ali & Suleiman, 2023). This study seeks to examine the extent to which economic empowerment influences women’s involvement in politics within Keffi, exploring both the direct and indirect effects of economic access on political engagement and leadership.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of economic empowerment in promoting women’s political participation, women in Keffi Local Government Area continue to face numerous obstacles to active political involvement. Economic empowerment in the region has not fully translated into increased political engagement, as many women still grapple with traditional gender roles, socio-cultural restrictions, and a lack of support from political structures (Musa & Gambo, 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of economic empowerment on women’s political participation in Keffi, identifying key challenges and opportunities for increasing women’s involvement in politics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To investigate the relationship between economic empowerment and women’s political participation in Keffi.

  • To assess the role of economic empowerment in enhancing women’s ability to run for political office.

  • To identify the barriers and enablers of women’s political involvement despite economic empowerment in Keffi.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does economic empowerment affect women’s political participation in Keffi?

  • To what extent does economic empowerment enable women to run for political office in Keffi?

  • What are the barriers to women’s political participation in Keffi, even with economic empowerment?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Economic empowerment significantly increases women’s political participation in Keffi.

  • Economic empowerment enhances women’s ability to run for political office in Keffi.

  • There are significant barriers preventing women in Keffi from fully utilizing their economic empowerment for political participation.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of economic empowerment in shaping women’s political participation in Keffi, Nasarawa State. The findings will inform policymakers, gender advocates, and political leaders about the critical link between economic empowerment and women’s engagement in politics. Understanding this relationship could lead to more effective policies and programs aimed at increasing women’s representation and participation in politics at both local and national levels.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Keffi Local Government Area and will assess the effects of economic empowerment on women’s political participation in this region. It will be limited to women who are economically empowered through entrepreneurship, education, or access to financial resources. Limitations include the challenge of defining and measuring economic empowerment accurately, as well as potential biases in responses from participants with personal vested interests in the study.
